Blasts rock Brussels airport, metro station; at least 13 killed

BRUSSELS: Explosions tore through the departure hall of Brussels airport on Tuesday morning and multiple blasts struck metro stations in the capital shortly afterwards, killing at least 13 people and injuring another 35, Belgian media said.
Belgian public broadcaster VRT said the bombing at the Brussels airport was a suicide attack.
Pictures on social media showed smoke rising from the terminal building through shattered windows and passengers running away down a slipway, some still hauling their bags.
There were reports of up to 10 people being killed in the blasts at the metro station. The explosion happened as the train arrived at metro station during the morning rush hour.
The blasts at the airport and metro station occurred four days after the arrest in Brussels of a suspected participant in November militant attacks in Paris that killed 130 people.
Belgian police had been on alert for any reprisal action.
All flights at the Brussels airport were cancelled following the explosions. Belgian media said rail traffic to the airport was also suspended.
Following the explosions at the metro station, which is close to the EU institutions, metro operator STIB announced on Twitter that the metro was also closed down.

Brussels transport authority said it has closed down all public transport, including buses, trams and the metro.
